We hope your holidays are joyful, relaxing and filled with peace. But if a mishap disrupts your festivities (promise us you won’t go full Clark Griswold up there with the lights on the roof!), you’ll need to know: urgent care or emergency room (ER)?
The difference is like dropping Aunt Jean’s infamous fruitcake on your toe (ouch!) versus getting run over by a reindeer (get me to the ER!). OK, holiday humor aside, what follows is a detailed (and completely serious) breakdown of the differences.
Urgent care
Your primary care provider can treat most non-emergency illnesses or injuries. But what if their office is closed or booked out? Carson Valley Health (CVH) Urgent Care is here to help when care can’t wait. You can walk into our Minden location and be seen without an appointment, Monday through Saturday. And we’re open till 7PM on weekdays.
Urgent care is for non-life-threatening issues that need prompt attention, such as:
- Sinus infections.
- Cold and flu-like symptoms.
- Sore throat.
- Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.
- Rashes.
- Pink eye (conjunctivitis).
- Minor cuts that may need stitches.
- Earaches.
- Minor burns.
- Migraines.
- Sprains and strains.
- Animal bites.
Emergency room
The ER is for more serious injuries or illnesses that threaten life or limb. The CVH ER is open 24/7 and is staffed and equipped to handle life-threatening issues.
Some of the reasons to go to the ER include:
- Difficulty breathing.
- Chest or upper body pain or discomfort that lasts more than a few minutes. These are potential heart attack warning signs.
- Bleeding that doesn’t stop.
- Stroke-like symptoms, such as facial drooping or weakness in an arm or leg.
- Major broken bones.
- Head injuries.
- Poisoning.
- Allergic reactions.
- Coughing up or vomiting blood.
- Persistent vomiting.
- Thoughts of hurting yourself or someone else.
- Seizures.
- Severe abdominal pain.
If you think it’s an emergency, call 911 right away. An ambulance is usually the fastest way to get help. Don’t delay care, even if you aren’t sure. Getting checked out can help you enjoy your holiday with peace of mind—and help you stay healthy for next year’s celebrations.
Care options for every need
Should you ever have a minor or major mishap, we have the right level of care available to you—during the holidays and all year long.
Urgent care. Carson Valley Health’s urgent care location in Minden is open from Monday through Friday, 8AM-7PM, and Saturdays from 9AM-5PM. Walk-ins are welcome, and x-rays and lab tests are performed on-site. On major holidays the Urgent Care is open reduced hours from 9AM-5PM.
Emergency room. Our emergency room is ready to care for you anytime, day or night. As Carson Valley’s only 24-7 emergency room, our facility features board-certified emergency physicians and support from our hospital and intensive care unit, if needed.
