Recommended Health Screenings

Screenings refer to tests or exams that are necessary to diagnose a variety of conditions and diseases. Screening tests may help find diseases or conditions early, when they are easier to treat. We recommend getting the necessary screening tests for conditions such as cancer and diabetes, if you are at risk or if you are of a certain age (for instance, women over 40 typically need mammograms to detect breast cancer even before a woman has any symptoms). Getting routine health screenings is one of the most important things you can do to protect your health.

Our preventative screenings include:

This test can help detect if you are at risk for broken bones and is recommended for people with certain medical conditions who meet specific criteria. Carson Valley Health’s Internal Medicine practice offers Bone DEXA scanning.

Helps detect conditions that may lead to a heart attack or stroke. This service is covered every 5 years to test your cholesterol, lipid, and triglyceride levels.

These tests help find pre-cancerous polyps (growths in the colon), so they can be removed before they turn into cancer.

Your emotional health is as important as your physical health. Talk to your healthcare provider if you have felt down, sad or hopeless or feel little interest in pleasure or doing things. Carson Valley Health’s Vitality for Life program is designed for seniors dealing with depression or anxiety.

These tests can check your hearing to determine if you have hearing loss and would benefit from adaptive devices such as hearing aids.

If you have risk factors for diabetes, including high blood pressure (hypertension), history of abnormal cholesterol and triglyceride levels (dyslipidemia), obesity, or a history of high blood sugar (glucose), you may need a diabetes screening. Based on the results of these screenings, you may need additional tests.

Every flu season (October to March), a new flu shot is released that can help protect you and those around you from contracting the most prevalent strains of the virus for that particular season.

Your risk for Hepatitis B increases if you have hemophilia, end-stage renal disease (ESRD), or a condition that increases your risk for infection. Other factors may increase your risk for Hepatitis B, so check with your doctor.

Starting at age 20, have your cholesterol checked regularly. Carson Valley Health offers affordable lab testing.

Medicare covers HIV screening for people with Medicare who are pregnant and people at increased risk for the infection, including anyone who asks for the test.

Women over the age of 40 should have yearly mammograms. Women between the ages 35 and 39 should consider one baseline mammogram test. These 3D digital mammograms take images of the breast tissue to detect abnormal masses. Detecting cancerous masses early is important for effective medical treatment.

Have a screening at age 65 to make sure your bones are strong. Primary Care Virginia Ranch offers bone density scans. For women over 50, download more information and a screening record.

Women of childbearing age who have had pap test abnormalities in the past 3 years should have these screenings once every 24 months, or once every 12 months if they are higher risk.

Men 50 and over are at risk of prostate cancer. This digital rectal exam and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test helps detect cancer before there are symptoms.

Ask your healthcare provider for an STI/STD screening to be checked for common sexually transmitted viruses and bacterial infections.

Talk to your primary care provider about recommended screenings.
