Patients with chronic rheumatic conditions can now get dedicated care close to home with the addition of two highly skilled rheumatology providers, Susan Knowles, MD and Kara Cole, APRN. Both providers bring a wealth of experience and established teamwork to Carson Valley Health Specialty Care Ironwood Clinic.
Susan Knowles, MD, a lifelong Nevadan, has lived in this area for over 10 years. She began her education at the University of Nevada School of Medicine and continued at the University of Arizona as Chief Resident and Clinical Instructor. Initially considering a career in primary care, Dr. Knowles was drawn to rheumatology due to the lasting relationships with patients and the impact she could have in their treatment. “What we treat in rheumatology is fascinating. It’s rewarding to make a real difference in someone’s life, especially when it comes to diagnosing and managing chronic conditions,” Dr. Knowles explained. “I also had the opportunity to work with some truly amazing mentors in the field.”
Dr. Knowles enjoys traveling, relaxing, and spending time outdoors with her family.
Kara Cole, APRN, a Minden resident for over 22 years, had a diverse background in oncology and occupational medicine before discovering her passion for rheumatology. “I was looking for a challenge and an opportunity to build ongoing relationships with patients managing chronic illnesses. Rheumatology offered that,” she shared. Kara earned her degree at South Dakota State University and the University of Nevada, Reno.
Outside of work, she enjoys running, reading, and spending time outdoors with her husband, Keith, their two daughters, and their dog, Kernel.
The need for increased care and rheumatology services is growing nationally, particularly in rural areas like Carson Valley. “We see a wide range of patients. Most often it’s either seniors or women who are diagnosed with autoimmune conditions in their 20s, 30s, and 40s,” said Dr. Knowles.
Patients will benefit from Dr. Knowles and Kara’s combined expertise, with both providers eager to meet the needs of patients and ensure timely access to care. “It’s great to work with someone you trust to deliver excellent care, and it’s important that we work as a team to support our patients,” said Kara.
Dr. Knowles added, “There’s nothing more fulfilling than hearing a patient say that we’ve helped them reclaim their health. It’s rewarding to witness their transformation, especially when they share with us that we’ve saved their lives.”
Carson Valley Health is pleased to welcome the Rheumatology team’s existing patients and invites new patients to schedule appointments.
