Carson Valley Health (CVH) announced a monumental achievement for patient care and rural healthcare infrastructure: the facility has been officially designated as a Level IV Trauma Center. This designation makes Carson Valley Health the first and only critical access hospital in Nevada to earn this crucial certification.
The Level IV designation is granted after a rigorous assessment process confirming CVH is equipped to provide essential trauma life support, stabilization, and comprehensive medical support services to injured patients 24 hours a day.
Elevating Rural Emergency Care: The ‘Golden Hour’ Advantage
Trauma is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity, particularly in rural regions where access to definitive care is often delayed due to geographical limitations. This Level IV certification ensures CVH is an essential access point, immediately enhancing patient survival odds by providing timely intervention within the critical “Golden Hour”—the first 60 minutes following a traumatic injury. The designation solidifies CVH’s structured emergency response mechanism.
As outlined in state trauma system standards, a Level IV center is required to maintain:
- 24-Hour Emergency Coverage: Continuous availability of an Emergency Department Physician and trauma-trained nurses.
- Rapid Stabilization: The immediate ability to evaluate, stabilize, diagnose, and initiate definitive care for trauma patients.
- Transfer Protocol: Established protocols for the seamless and rapid transfer of patients who require more specialized, high-level services to a Level I, II, or III center.
- Trauma Team Activation: Defined criteria for activating a dedicated trauma team upon arrival of severely injured patients.
- Community Contribution: Mandated participation in community-wide injury prevention and trauma education programs.
Said Jeff Prater, Carson Valley Health CEO, “This designation is the culmination of immense dedication and an ongoing commitment to meeting the highest standards of trauma care. It validates that when time is critical, our community can rely on CVH to provide immediate, life-saving stabilization. For our community, this means that trauma patients no longer must travel to Carson City simply to determine the next step in their care. Those life-saving decisions are now made right here at Carson Valley Health within minutes, not miles, when every second truly counts.”
CVH emergency providers and nurses are critical to achieving a Level IV Trauma Center designation in a Critical Access Hospital, as they are the first responders responsible for rapid assessment, stabilization, and initiation of life-saving interventions. Their expertise, adherence to trauma protocols, and commitment to continuous training ensure timely and effective care that meets state and national trauma standards.
Prior to this designation, Carson Valley Health utilized established partnerships with Battle Born Medevac, East Fork Fire District, Care Flight, and other regional healthcare providers; however, the formal Level IV designation now solidifies its integral role in Nevada’s statewide trauma network, filling a critical gap in rural emergency medical services. The focus on efficient stabilization and timely transfer is paramount—research indicates that efficient interfacility transfers from lower-level centers can be associated with a 31% reduction in mortality for critically injured patients, underscoring the improved outcomes this designation brings.
Said Joey Loehner, CEO of Rural Medevac Alliance, “Battle Born Medevac is excited to partner with Carson Valley Health in this monumental achievement. Having access to a local trauma center will allow for greatly reduced transport times to definitive care for both air and ground ambulances. Additionally, the streamlined relationship between established trauma centers will allow for early activation of critical resources when transfer of patients is necessary. We cannot thank Carson Valley Health enough for their hard work in improving access to care for the rural communities in the surrounding areas.”
Commitment to Prevention and Public Health
Beyond the Emergency Department, the Level IV designation mandates CVH’s participation in community education and injury prevention efforts. CVH will expand structured initiatives aimed at reducing preventable injuries and fatalities across Carson Valley, enhancing overall public health resilience through targeted programs like geriatric fall prevention. Furthermore, CVH’s participation in the statewide trauma registry ensures data-sharing and continuous performance improvement for the entire trauma network.
This recognition is a testament to the clinical quality, continuous training, and resource investment CVH has made to ensure a coordinated and rapid response to all types of trauma incidents.
CVH extends our gratitude to the dedication of Assemblymember Gregory Koening for sponsoring AB326 in the 2025 Nevada Legislature, and the Nevada Rural Hospital Partners for supporting the effort to bring the Level IV Trauma designation to Nevada.
“With this Level IV Trauma Center designation, Carson Valley Health becomes only the second hospital in northern Nevada to achieve a trauma designation. Carson Valley Health has taken the first step to truly build a system for trauma that will serve all of northern and rural Nevada,” said Blayne Osborn, President, Nevada Rural Hospital Partners, and Nevada State Assemblyman.
