6 Reasons Men Should See a Urologist

Many men aren’t sure when to see a urologist. But these specialists treat a wide range of urinary tract issues in men and women, along with male reproductive concerns. At Carson Valley Health (CVH), our urology specialists can help you with many men’s health concerns, including these six common issues:

1. Prostate concerns. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is medical lingo for an enlarged prostate. It’s a common problem as men age and their prostate gland grows. By age 40 or 50, many men have a problem with urine flow that may be due to BPH.

For instance:

· Trouble starting a urine stream.

· A weak urine stream.

· Dribbling after you urinate.

· Waking up to pee at night.

· Having an urgent need to go.

Urologists can treat BPH with medicines, minimally invasive procedures or surgery. That can be a big relief.

2. Urinary problems. Urologists can address urinary problems in addition to those caused by BPH, including incontinence or infections. Signs and symptoms of a urinary tract infection (UTI)—yes, men get them too—can include:

· Burning when you pee.

· Frequent trips to the bathroom even if you just went.

· Lower belly or back pain.

· Passing urine that is cloudy, bloody or has a very strong odor.

3. Conditions affecting the penis. A urologist can help men with penis-related problems, including Peyronie’s disease, which is when scar tissue builds up in the penis, causing a curve. The condition can be painful and affect your sex life. But the good news is there are treatments that may help. Other conditions we treat are phimosis and balanitis.

4. Erectile dysfunction (ED). ED is a common issue for many men, and a urologist can offer a wide range of treatment options, including oral, injectable and urethral suppository medicines that help improve erections. A urologist can also suggest lifestyle changes—such as getting regular exercise, eating healthfully, quitting smoking and managing weight—that may help as well.

5. Family planning, including vasectomy. If you’re considering a vasectomy, a urologist is your go-to specialist. Vasectomy procedures are often performed right in the doctor’s office, and you can typically go home the same day.

6. Kidney stones. To be clear, anyone can get kidney stones, not just men. But we’ve included it because we think it’s important to know that a urologist can help should you ever find yourself dealing with painful stones. Urologists can remove kidney stones through special procedures and—since stones often recur—help you create a prevention plan.
