This June, Carson Valley Health is offering discounted lab screenings to help men maintain peak wellness.
Every guy deserves to live and feel his best. That’s why we’re focused on helping men take charge of their health through proactive care.
This Men’s Health Month, consider getting our package of discounted lab screenings. The tests, which don’t require a doctor’s referral, can give you a heads-up about potential health issues that affect a lot of men.
Prostate cancer
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers among men in the U.S. To help detect it early, the PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test looks for a high level of a substance called PSA in the blood.
The risk of prostate cancer rises with age. So you may want to talk to your doctor about screening:
- At age 40 or 45, if you’re at high risk of prostate cancer due to being African American or having a family history of the disease.
- At age 55, if you’re at average risk.
Prostate cancer screening has pros and cons. Discuss it with your doctor before deciding if it’s right for you.
Heart disease
Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of men. Many things can contribute to your individual risk for heart disease, including unhealthy cholesterol levels, which can lead to clogged arteries—and circulation problems, stroke or heart attack. You can have your cholesterol levels checked with a lipid panel (cholesterol test).
Another test that can help check on your heart health: an EKG. Short for electrocardiogram, it records your heart’s electrical activity. It can help detect any abnormal heartbeats or heart rhythms that may be a sign of heart disease. The test takes only a few minutes and is noninvasive (electrode sensors will be placed on your arms, legs and chest).
Thyroid disorders and more
The thyroid gland in your neck makes hormones that affect many of your body’s functions, including your metabolism, your digestion and even your mood.
Thyroid issues are more common in women, but they affect men too. And detecting them can make a big difference in your health. Having too much or too little thyroid hormone can lead to a variety of symptoms, including fatigue, weight loss or weight gain and depression, to name a few. A thyroxine (T4 hormone) test and a thyroid stimulating hormone test can help detect and monitor thyroid issues.
Our discounted lab screenings also include a comprehensive metabolic panel and complete blood count tests. These blood tests can help check for a wide range of issues, including anemia and problems with blood sugar levels, electrolyte balance, and kidney and liver function.
